Topic: MoWeS: What's next?

Dear Community,

I am amazed how popular MoWeS became and currently I am wondering what's next with MoWeS? But therefore I need your help!

The development of MoWeS Portable III has started but many system do not yet have installed the needed .NET framework which would make MoWeS Portable III not that portable as I want it to be. On Windows 7 MoWeS Portable II seems to run fine and thus I do not see the sense to continue to develop MoWeS Portable III (this does not mean the development is cancelled but only postponed!).

But that does not mean that MoWeS development should pause. What are your ideas and suggestions? What do you really miss when using MoWeS?

Let me know and let's make MoWeS even better!

Re: MoWeS: What's next?

* update check for the modules
* display reachable ip adress
* export to server2go ;) http://www.server2go-web.de/
* i liked the idea of the fully modular mowes III, but you're right .net is a problem for portability

regards

Kay

Re: MoWeS: What's next?

Dear Kay,

* update for modules ist already implemented = just click on the update button
* reachable ip address with an implementation for dyndns or something like that?
* why would you like a server2go export? wouldnt an import be better? smile

Re: MoWeS: What's next?

I would really like to see instructions on how to move a project from MoWeS on my PC to my hosted server space.  In my case for a Silverstripe website I am making.  I have searched on google, in the Silverstripe forum, on this forum, posted the question on the Silverstripe forum, and still nobody has even given me a hint as to how to do it.  Seemed simple enough.  Copy all the files, move to the server, exporting the php database using phpmyadmin and importing it to the server with the same program.  But no good.

I don't mind if MoWeS III is not portable.  It runs great on my netbook and the netbook is portable enough for me.  Perhaps you can 1st issue a non-portable version then update it when what you are waiting for is no longer an issue.

Good idea. We could produce a screencast for that.

Edit: A screencast would great!  I suspect some of the problems might be from moving from a MS Windows OS (XP in my case) to a most likely linux based OS my host is running.

Maybe there are some paths the need to be changed in the silverstripe config files?

Re: MoWeS: What's next?

Well a couple of things come to my mind:

- the installer: using the mixer assumes you are going to install once in a defined configuration, the installer migh do a download-on-demand and archive the downloaded install package for reuse on the stick
- the packages: this would requires quite some effort on the various packages ... a DokuWiki or a Drupal would work when just being installed like MoWeS does. But it is far from being usable. Many many extension really make it a product and installing them is not really easy. Having a package (or multiple) to add the extensions to the product would be nice. Most product do have some "must-have" packages that are so popular that everybody wants them. This would allow boosting people into using a product.
- the website: more information about the products packaged would be nice: there is free introduction to everything available. An introductory page per product plus a nice linklist would help people to ramp up their work on a product.

Using this: MoWeS could extend to be THE jumpstart tool to get acquainted and productive with a product. Right now it is a developer's or hacker's gadget to ease life and show off ;-) (Ok, I simplify the world drastically, don't take that serious). All in all it is a tool for professionals. Extend the market and address beginners! This one is a bit daring! MoWeS is great if being using locally. Now I would want to acquite a cheap hosting solution and do the same thing there. Choosing a set of 3-5 German and maybe US hosters (the majors 1&1, T-something, ..) mainly those that only offer ftp access for software deployment and offer ... a web driven installer for analogue packages to those of MoWeS. E.g. I install Drupal or DokuWiki on my stick and the alike analogue packages on my 1&1 account and both are setup alike! Cool! Having a jumpstart package for cheap hosters and a local "stage-environment" on your USB stick. I suppose you be able to sell this to the one or other IT magazine even ;-)

Some hosters of jumpstart packages for web applications, you might do this based on MoWeS terminology, so MoWeS4Stick and MoWeS4Web.

This for now,

Cheers, prefect

Re: MoWeS: What's next?

Overall I am very happy with the MoWeS platform, its performance and I use it everyday as part of my workflow.  Ideas that have come up in my travels are:

- replicate MySQL from one stick to another with a push of the button.  This would be very handy for knowledge sharing.  It would be even better if you could specify the tool ( mediawiki, Joomla, etc. )

- Keep it portable please - freeing one from the problems of an individual computer is one of MoWeS main advantages

- a method to link MoWeS installations together for collaboration and grid capabilites.

Best regards,

Kolboni

Re: MoWeS: What's next?

Hi,

First of all I would like to say that I am very pleased with MoWeS and how it is developing. I use it daily, mainly as a portable webserver for my mediawiki. So please keep up the good work!

When we come to What's next, something like this has already been requested here:
http://www.mowesforum.chsoftware.net/to … table-iii/

As I stated in the link above (and some extra), my feature wishes are (some have already been (partly) implemented):

1) I would very much like automated (scheduled) backup of the MySQL database and maybe some sort of automated restore. I would like the backup to be made available as a package (like the ones you can download with MoWeS Mixer), but now containing the backup created using the automated backup. By doing this, I can create and schedule a script to copy that backup to another PC and when I start MoWeS there, it should find the backup package and automatically install it so on that other PC I will also running the latest version from the backup.
* Backups per installed package would be nice.

2) I would like synchronisation between multiple instances of MoWeS databases on different PC's.

3) I would like to be able to make backup copies of the complete MoWeS folder, I would like to be able to stop MoWeS entirely (incl. MySQL, Apache) from a script, backup the folder and restart MoWeS from that same script again.

4) Package enable/disable and uninstall. The ability enable/disable and uninstall packages in/from MoWeS.

5) Automatic check for, download and install package updates and the ability to enable/disable this feature per package and yes/no/later popup request options to install update when downloaded and available.

6) The ability to install packages from mowes mixer twice. So I would be able to, for example, install two mediawiki's.

7) Request for userid's and passwords during the installation so we are no longer forced to use the default passwords. This will make MoWeS and the installed packags more secure.

8) MoWes connects to the internet to show a message at the status display. Currently it shows "MoWeS: What's next? Share your ideas with us!". I would like to be able to enable/disable this.

9) A menu item to open the URL (stated at "Use the follwoing URL in the browser" at the options menu).

Cheers,

Eddy

Re: MoWeS: What's next?

Hi,

First of all, congratulations for your great job, it's incredible.

I'd like to suggest a pair of ideas:

1. Restart service/s button to restart apache and/or mysql

2. show Apache httpd.conf / my.cnf and php.ini links to edit or a simple-integrated editor

Best regards.
